Symi Sea-Going
Again At The Forefront

The new mono-hulled, high-speed  ferry which will serve Symi, Rhodes and three other islands from 2001 is claimed to be a breakthrough in sea transportation. Constructed mainly of aluminium and with the most up-to-date stabilising system, its 35-knot speed and special design makes it a world leader in passenger
ferrying.

A statement from Markos Patatoukos, the President of the  ANES company announces that  ' the boat is of the newest type that modern ship-building can offer, and this is something which specially honours Symiots, as once  again, we are ahead of everyone  just as we were in 1989 with the purchase of the Symi II.'

The choice of ship, he says, was made after special weight had been given to its behaviour at sea -  a behaviour which would mean a combination of both speed and comfort for the passengers.

Tourist and Trade Increases
The new service could mean a big increase both in the number of tourists, and of commercial trade  and Mr Patatoukos warns that while some people are not happy with  potential increases  in  passenger and commercial trade, 'It would be a catastrophe for our company, not to mention the Island', if the new boat didn't come into service.

Meanwhile, he says 'ANES will do whatever is possible , disregarding the costs, for the better servicing of the citizens and visitors on our Island' and that people must 'be patient and be understanding about whatever small problems come up in the resultant commercial and passenger movement.'

The new 'all-technology' ship is to be built in Australia, and says Mr Patatou

May Day Parade.

kos 'The decision of the Consultative Coastal Transportation Committee to grant our company the licence to operate the boat on the new Symi-Rhodes-Kos route, with stops at Nissiros and Tilos, is the best reward for all our efforts.'

Since then, Mayor Miltiadis Sarris has been to a meeting in Athens to discuss with other regional mayors and the Min

isters of Navigation and the Aegean the forward planning for inter-Island ferry routes.

He told the 'Visitor', 'Among other things,we need to think about the provision of car-carrying ferries. So many more visitors these days want to come here with their own vehicles and explore the Island - and with the completion of the Yialos-Panormitis road in October, this will be so much easier for them.'
