February 11th: More photos from Symi trade mission to Tarpon Springs.

For many years this special lady has meticulously cared for St Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Tarpon Springs, Florida.  A Kalymnion, she greets all visitors with a warm and welcoming smile.

Maria Pantelis shares memories with Vasile Faklis.  She taught Vasile as a child in Greek school.  She has taught 3 generations of Greek families living in Tarpon Springs, and served for over 20 years as President of the Dodecanese Association of Tarpon Springs.

At 71 years old Maria is still going strong at the restaurant named after her.  Shown here with her sons Michael (left) and Costas (right) who currently run the family owned business.

A mural of Symi with its prominent clock tower proudly commands wall space at Mama Maria’s restaurant in Tarpon Springs, Florida.  It was at this restaurant that the Halki and Kalymnos delegations were hosted for the Sister-City celebrations.

Reverend Father Michael of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral warmly blesses the youngest members of the Faklis family of Tarpon Springs, Florida.

It’s easy to see why Sergio Haritos holds a 7th degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do, has competed in 48 countries worldwide and is an international champion!

Sergio Haritos is well known in the international world of Karate and Tae Kwon Do.  Sergio served as Captain of the US national team, and owns multiple martial arts schools in Greece and the U.S.  Several years ago Sergio was hosted by Symi’s Mayor and performed a martial arts exhibition.  He lives and teaches in Tarpon Springs, but grew up in Kalymnos.  His father was from Symi, and his mother from Kalymnos.

February 8th: 'Symi Island Mayor has received an official invitation from Tarpon Springs, Florida USA to become one of its Sister Cities.'

The Faklis family has been in the shoe business for over one hundred years. George Faklis’ father, Vasile Papafaklis left Symi in 1908 and brought his knowledge of shoe making to Tarpon Springs. (Shown Katy and George Faklis of Faklis Department Store and Shoe Repair).
