GREECE AS A WINE-GROWING NATION

In more ways than one, the history of both wine and vine in Europe and the rest of the world can be linked to the history of Greece, the land of an outstanding wine tradition. Going back to the dawn of Western civilization, one can establish the close links between wine and vine: wine deified by the Ancient Greeks who worshipped Dionysus.Dionysus, son of Zeus, god of joy and pleasure, engendering a cult which undoubtedly inspired poets, philosophers, sculptors and painters and helped to breed the culture of Ancient Greece.

Vine varieties traced in ancient texts were so numerous and of such differing features that, according to Virgil, "it might be easier to count grains of sand on a beach". It is some of such early Greek vine varieties that have reached us through the ages with little or no change, which today determine the quality, features and types of Greek wines.

WINES WITH A SINGLE APPELLATION OF ORIGIN

There are some 30 small regions in Greece marked by special types of microclimate or soil which favour choice wine production. Such wines being the product of specially selected Greek wine varieties or, in some cases, noble vines of French origin, have a character all  their own. Growing and ripening under conditions singling out their type, they are traded as characteristic products of Greek Wine.their region. They are appellation of origin wines, acknowledged as such by Greek legislation and Community regulations governing quality wine produced in a denominated region (V.Q.P.R.D)

Our wine cellar has in stock 140 different kinds of these organic Greek wines, making it one of the most important wine cellars in Greece. Let Nikos, our wine master, guide you through the cellar and select with you the bottle that suits your desires.
