Editorial

Hugo Tyler has been walking across the interior of Symi for some twenty years, both as a solo walker and an official guide for tour parties.  In this time he estimates that he had covered a total of something like twelve thousand miles in the mountains.  You could call him a professional hiker.

Yet with all his experience, it was only last month that he slipped on a loose stone, fell and broke his leg in two places.  Stranded, half-way to St. Emilianos, as he says  'with a foot that could merely flap around at the end of my leg like a dying fish.'

Fortunately he was able to drag himself into some shade and even more fortunately he was carrying a VHF radio and so was able to summon help.

Not everyone might be as lucky and his accident only goes to underline the problems that can occur - especially to inexperienced holidaymaking walkers.  So the message is.............if you're going to explore the interior without a guide, then if possible take a mobile phone with you and the number of someone who can fetch help in an emergency.

Numerically, the 'Visitor' is two years old this month. Our very first edition was a four-page issue which came out in June '97.  But as we did not publish regularly throughout the following winter, this is our 24th monthly edition..

During that time we have be fortunate enough to build up a list of subscribers from nineteen different countries around the world, as well as vastly increasing our circulation on Symi itself and also in Rhodes, Halki and on Nisseros.

Regular readers will have seen a number of changes - hopefully for the better - as well as a notable increase in size.  At two years old, we are flourishing; therefore we would like to thank all of you - subscribers, readers, contributors, interviewees, advertisers, the people of Symi and last, but not least, the Mayor, Miltiadis Sarris and the Town Council - for your support and encouragement without which we would not have been able to continue.SYMI ISLAND, GREECE.
