The best way to describe a chat room is to imagine a real room filled with, let's say, twenty people at a party. As you walk in, you recognise a friend and walk over to talk to them. Another friend joins you and the three of you start talking. Meanwhile, there are other groups in the room talking amongst themselves; maybe you overhear something interesting and go over to join that discussion. An online chat room is very similar. When you log on, you may recognise people already there from their names; you will probably want to say hello to them. Other people may recognise you and soon you are chatting to five people. In order to 'talk' to someone, you type your comment which appears a few seconds later as the latest line of a rolling conversation. When you have read these instructions, go to the foot of this page and click to enter the
chat area. Your 'handle' is simply your name, or nickname, but you don't have one yet so- -click on the sign up here link (DON'T click on the 'Log In' button just yet!) You will be asked for some details to enable you to create a name and password. The next time you visit the chat room, you simply type in your 'handle' and password and you can log-in. If your nickname is rejected, try adding a letter or letters to the beginning or ending of your name and try again. Because this chat room is part of a large network of chat pages, common names will already have been taken. To give you an example, my name is Mike Gadd. I tried Mike (rejected), Mikegadd (amazingly, since it isn't a common name-rejected). I finally compromised with mgadd1977 (the first part of my e-mail address). Also remember that this is not a bulletin board-this is happening live, in real-time. If there is nobody in the chat room when you log in, come back later. Alternatively, arrange to 'meet' some friends at a pre-arranged time for a chat (this is what virtual-reality is all about!). Your friends might be in three different countries in three different time zones, but you can talk together for a fraction of the cost of international 'phone calls. AND IT'S ALL COMPLETELY FREE!!
