PAN-HELLENIC EDUCATION CONFERENCE FOR SYMI |
|
| This
month Symi will be the venue for the first pan-Hellenic conference on education since the
new national schools curriculum imposed by Education Minister Gerasimos Arsenis about
eighteen months ago. |
|
Top educationalists from all over the country, and local teachers of all
grades, will be coming to the symposium for education and culture at the Yilos Cultural
Centre on September 18th and 19th - and they will have plenty to discuss, for Arsenis' changes, which he claimed would give students easier
access to universities, and swept through from primary school level through the technical
colleges to the high schools, resulted in national student strikes and
demonstrations (including a month's strike and a five-hour organised march on Symi).
. They said that the system doesn't work, and that,as it involves too-long hours and more difficult subjects and examinations, it actually discourages some secondary school pupils from carrying on their studies. - and their views were supported by some teachers. The first day of the conference will be devoted to the educational life in Symi; past, present and future. The agenda for the second session features the 20th century challenge in education and discussions of current ideas and problems. "Hopefully it will
result in some new concepts" says conference organiser Eleni Kritikou, ' and,
by making comparisons, maybe a problem-solving solution found by one area will be able to
provide the answer to other dilemmas."
