Chorio - The old town of Symi

The harbour area (Yialos) and the old town (Chorio) in Symi are connected by two massive stone staircases, the Kali Strata and Katarraktes. Many of the fine neoclassical dwellings on the Kali Strata still lie vacant, ruined by the war-time blast triggered by the retreating German army in December 1944.

The steepness of the staircase has two effects; climbing the steps regularly helps to keep the residents fit, (see 'Truly ancient Greeks') and also deters the day-trippers from Rhodes making the arduous ascent.

Those who do reach the top (or cheat and take the bus or a taxi) are rewarded with magnificent views of the harbour. There are several cafés and restaurants on the steps, with terraces overlooking the bay.

Chorio itself is a warren of narrow streets and alleys, with tavernas, bars and small shops and supermarkets catering for the local as well as the tourist population. The accommodation here may be more difficult to reach (by foot up the Kali Strata, by bus or by taxi) but the views down to Yialos and Pedi Bay more than compensate and the area is much quieter, both during the day and at night. It is also cooler during the hottest summer months.

Take time to explore the back streets and you will come across some of the seven churches in the village as well as the island's museum
