Symi's Controversial Centre Point

Taverna owners and traders around the Town Square are to petition the City Council for a major clean-up and improvement programme there before the start of the coming tourist season, to make it one of the Island's main social venues.

One taverna-owner told the Visitor :"The Square should be the focal point of Yialos - a place for tourists to admire, and for both visitors and locals to use as a pleasant rendevous - especially in the evenings. There should be better lighting; plenty of places to sit, and more and better-maintained flower-beds.......and all the litter bins, parked vehicles and other eye-sores should be cleared away.

At the moment, it's hardly attractive enough

The Town Square.

The Town Square which local business people want to see developed for the Millennium

to tempt people to visit; never mind being the sort of place where they would be encouraged to stay around or use as a spot for an evening promenade and a social venue with their friends.

"It wouldn't cost a lot of money to put right - it's more a case of effort than hard cash - and with a little planning the Square could become a pleasant piazza and one of the most appealing spots on Symi."

"If the Council are looking for a Millennium project - then this could be it."

Meanwhile, on Page 2, Mayor Miltiadis Sarris announces a list of the Island's on-going projects, which includes good news for those interested in the proposed Special Needs School at Pedi.
