Taverna owners and traders around the Town Square are to petition the City Council for a major clean-up and improvement programme there before the start of the coming tourist season, to make it one of the Island's main social venues. One taverna-owner told the Visitor :"The Square should be the focal point of Yialos - a place for tourists to admire, and for both visitors and locals to use as a pleasant rendevous - especially in the evenings. There should be better lighting; plenty of places to sit, and more and better-maintained flower-beds.......and all the litter bins, parked vehicles and other eye-sores should be cleared away.
