Symi's Bays and Beaches

Symi has a wide variety of beaches, from the family-friendly, sandy Agios Nikolaos to the pebbly grandeur of Nanou. Most are accessible by taxi-boat from the harbour or from Pedi Bay, or on foot. The more remote are only reachable by day-trip boats, on foot or on two/four wheels. Learn more in our Beach Guide.

Symi Town and Harbour

Symi harbour, 'Yialos' (or 'Gialos'), an architecturally protected area since the 1970's, is a lively mix of restaurants, shops and bars during the day, when the day-trippers from Rhodes visit the island. After they leave, Yialos reverts to quiet normality, until coming alive again in sophisticated style at night. The old town of 'Chorio' ('Horio') is linked to the harbour area by two massive stone staircases, the most accessible being the 'Kali Strata' (Good Road), which is lined with beautiful neo-classical mansions. Most of these lie in ruins, a legacy of the decline suffered by the island after its sponge-diving industry collapsed. Many houses were also damaged or destroyed by the retreating German army in 1945 as an ammunition dump was blown up. These houses are now being beautifully restored; many are being made available as holiday accommodation.
