The newly restored Kafeneion

Circled, Alemina Square
|
If you wander through the
alleyways and lanes of Upper Chorio, beyond the range of any conceivable vehicle
apart from the donkey, you will come upon Alemina square. A century ago, this
was the hub of a thriving community, a bustling square of kafeneions, backgammon, dancing
and Greek community. After a generation of neglect, Alemina square is once again
becoming a focal point of activity, this time as the sensitively restored Artists'
Quarter and Workshop.
The old Alemina kafeneion is opening soon as a mediterranean restaurant,
specialising in mezze-style meals as well as functions. One side of the square is an
open-air theatre conjured up out of the ruins.
Opposite the theatre and
facing the kafeneion is a gardened outdoor seating area within a stone wall. The
fourth side of the square is a large Neo-Classical building, which will house a
big, multi-purpose studio/workshop. Various other ruins in the vicinity are undergoing a
metamorphosis into a meditation centre, studios, gardens and workshops.
